Exhibitions | Tandanya
The Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute promotes Indigenous Australian art, including visual art, music and storytelling.
Tandanya is a visionary and vibrant place for all to explore and experience contemporary and traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural expression, through the performing and visual arts.
As a visitor to Tandanya, you can meet Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, walk through diverse and exciting exhibitions in our art galleries, watch our cultural presentation and yidaki (didgeridoo) or dance performance (Tuesday - Sunday at 12 noon).
Peaceful space for quiet reflection
We visited when the exhibition regarding the Nuclear Testing in Australia was presented...very moving, appalling, incredulous and heroic...a necessary story to be told.
The art work was interesting and informative. As with every gallery, etc. the shop serves a purpose and is a means to an end...as bright and pricey as most others; but a good variety of related items...the Warumpi Band live on!
I will always support the cultural work of indigenous people; and try to understand and appreciate their past lives, present concerns & future hopes and dreams.

A missed opportunity to inform and educate
There are lots of people who would like to learn about aboriginal culture. I had high hopes that Tandanya would help me to learn and discover more, unfortunately this did not happen and I feel that the institute have missed a trick by under using the available space to inform and educate.
Although there appears that events are held at the institute, none of these were occurring when I visited. There were some art displays, with a brief information card in one room. Again I would have enjoyed more information about the art displays shown.

Interesting place worth visiting. On our last visit, we were invited to participate in a workshop drawing aboriginal paintings. For our overseas visitors, this was an unforgettable experience.

We went with high hopes of getting an insight of the life of the indigenous people from Australia.. What we got was an overpriced gift shop and a few paintings... to say this was a poor show was an understatement. Go if you have a free 15 mins, dont bother if you are pushed for time
