It all began in March 2005 when the first loan on kiva.org was funded. Elizabeth a woman in Uganda used her $500 Kiva loan to expand her fish-mongering business traveling to purchase fish by the basket to sell at local markets. That $500 changed her life.

Nineteen years later 5 million people have used Kiva loans to change theirs.
